Shopping for Mid Century Furniture in East London

You might think it strange for us to write an article about the best places to find mid century furniture in east London given that is exactly what we do, in the exact place we do it.

And you might have a point.

But at the heart of our business, and this really is true, is the desire to help you get the right furniture.

The reality is that we won’t be able to help everyone that walks through our door or visits our site.

But if one of our friends and neighbours can, then we’d rather point someone in their direction than have that customer leave our company feeling blue.

What is more, everyone on this list boasts great stock, a friendly welcome and a wealth of knowledge that should be celebrated.

And, well, that’s what we’re going to do.

MCM in east London Chase and Sorensen

Chase & Sorensen

Founded in 2010, Chase & Sorensen has become synonymous with the best in Scandinavian design.

Even the briefest of trips to their Dalston store will show you that their buying and curating prowess is as good as anyone’s.

Like us, they stock a healthy amount of some of the best mid century and vintage Danish furniture.

Unlike us, however, they also boast a fine collection of ‘New Nordic’ design which is likely to make the perfect complement for your interior theme.

To cut a long story short, this store comes as highly recommended for anyone who is in any way interested in all things Scandinavian.

And there is plenty of great eating, drinking and shopping nearby so you can easily plan a day around your visit.

Lovely.

MCM London Modern Warehouse

The Modern Warehouse

Few can compete when it comes to the stock, space and sourcing ability of the guys at The Modern Warehouse.

Time after time, they seem to be able to add the very best in mid century design to their inventory and, to be frank, their catalogue often leaves us a little green with envy.

If you have questions about mid century modern furniture, this is the place to go as they have probably had every piece you can care to name through their doors at one time or another.

To make things even better, it’s all displayed in an amazing Hackney Wick warehouse space that is worth the visit on its own.

Again, long story short, we have a lot of respect for what they do and we think you’ll enjoy the trip.

MCM east London Peanut Vendor

The Peanut Vendor

The Peanut Vendor has been sourcing and selling early-to-late 20th century wares since 2008.

In 2015, the business moved from its original home in Newington Green to a new showroom on the fringe of Victoria Park—and it’s the sort of space that makes you hold your hands up and say "that is a job well done".

As with everyone on this list, the Peanut Vendor has an impressive collection of furniture and homewares.

Unlike everyone on this list, however, they also have something else to offer: a cracking café on the premises.

The shop is well worth a visit. In fact, it’s worth going out of your way to visit it. Peruse the inventory, grab a skinny latté, then head to the park to mull over a purchase.

This is a really good set up and it is worth planning your day around a visit.

MCM east London House of Twenty

House of Twenty

House of Twenty always has great stock and you can expect to be greeted by some superb mid century and Danish design when you enter through the door.

Where they differ from everyone else on the list is in their on-site upholstery and restoration workshop.

In truth, everyone on here is probably a bit jealous of this. We can say honestly that we are.

House of Twenty also boasts a fantastic space in an old carbonic factory that is set just back from the canal and on the fringes of the park.

So, as with the Peanut Vendor, you’ll have plenty to do alongside shopping for high-quality furniture.

MCM east London 2 Columbia Road

Two Colombia Road

Two Columbia Road enjoys what is probably the most visible of all the locations on this list, sitting as it does on the corner of Hackney Road and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Columbia Road.

Inside this most desirable of spaces is a wonderfully curated selection of furniture and artworks that is likely to leave you swooning.

And it is their art collection that probably differentiates them from everyone else on the list. Comprehensive and varied, this range should offer options for anyone who enthuses over art and design from the period.

As with everyone on this list, there is plenty to see nearby.

Chief among these is the flower market which takes place every Sunday just a little further down the road.

For what it’s worth, we think the market could serve as the perfect backdrop against which to consider purchasing an item of furniture or artwork that will remain a part of your set up for years to come.

MCM east London Forest

Førest London

No east London mid century furniture list would be complete without Førest London (even if pedants may say that it’s located in central, not east London).

Founded by collector Eva Coppens, Førest boasts an enviable inventory of Scandinavian and northern European design that stretches from armchairs to accessories.

As with everyone else mentioned on this list, you can expect to walk into a brilliantly dressed space containing the finest in vintage furniture design.

However, time it right and you’ll also get the chance to look at some art, as Førest also hosts exhibitions throughout the year.

Given that Førest is located in Clerkenwell, you will also be spoiled for choice when it comes to things you can do before or after so you can make your store visit the main attraction of a thoroughly enjoyable day.
